A Classic Work Everyone Should Know, as a Starter.
Legendary psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi reveals what leads to moments of creative ‘flow’ — whether we’re artists at an easel or scientists in a lab. Based on nearly 100 interviews with exceptional people in all walks of life; biologists, physicists, politicians, business leaders, poets and artists as well as stories from the factory floor, over his 30 years research on the subject, this book discusses why the "tortured genius" is basically a myth. Most important, Csikszentmihalyi explains why creativity needs to be cultivated and is necessary for the future of our world.
Your Basic Creativity Toolkit
What kind of hammer and chisel do you need to create great ideas from nothing? Nowadays we call them Thinking Tools. Michalko’s groundbreaking Thinkertoys was the only available book of this type when I started my research in 2001. This revised and expanded edition includes a multitude of linear & intuitive mind maps and hundreds of hints, tricks, tips, tales, puzzles and fun exercises to help you approach all sorts of problems in unconventional ways. Try all of them out and you’ll learn the basic techniques to look at the same information as everyone else and see something different. Want to be an expert in seeing as Albert Szent-Gyorgyi said, ‘what everyone else has seen, but thinking what no one else has thought’? Then you need to train your imagination to work with analogy. How? Start by identifying the Fundamental Patterns of Creation - the 3 Stages , 7 Steps & 1 Principle that hold it all together. Creative Thinking in Dreaming.

How Creativity is Systematically Nurtured.
In five truncated words, Coyle’s point is that: “Greatness isn’t born. It’s grown.” Then he tells you how. Apparently, the author wondered why Brazil produced so many fabulous footballers and Korea so many famous women golfers. So he went looking for the answer. Talent hotbeds are what he found. This is his own term for areas - perhaps countries, perhaps tiny schools - that produce disproportionate amounts of world-class talent. And his point is that they don’t evolve by chance but as the result of a repeatable method of skill acquisition and building foundations of success based on 1. “deep practice”, 2. “ignition” and 3. “master coaching”. By understanding how these elements are related and in common, across all examples, this book presents a kind of methodology to crack the code on talent. It begs us to consider how to create a similar environment for excellence in innovation.
A Blueprint for Innovation Hotbeds.
How do we create a hotbed of innovation? What kind of mind training does it really require to be creative on demand - effortlessly,? We face the same questions if we want to create a world-class innovation culture that gets results on intractable problems in a technical industry as we do, when we want to create a community invention centre or school programme. And, possibly, we find the same answer - an imperative to create a gamified eco-system that shares a common language at all levels and has fractal manifestations. Originally designed as an innovation programme for the Engineering Industry, this book outlines how to create just such an ecosystem for systematic innovation that makes learning invisible and can spread virally. The exercises provide hours of fun for kids yet get results for adults in just minutes a day. Run the game to solve real-world problems as you go and teach others to DIY an Innovation Hotbed - or Army- in their local world.
How the Context for Innovation Matters. A Lot.
Gladwell’s book is another classic which suggests that talent is nurtured, not born. It focusses on the general context in which mastery & creativity can become possible for individuals, before Coyle’s ‘hotbeds’ ever exist - and indeed, potentially lead to their creation. One of the 3 main factors identified is out of our hands - history. Being born in the right historical place and time is critical - and likewise the history of events in our life. Being too young or too old to take advantage when luck smiles is no good. At the same time, the quality of our history determines success - it’s more important than IQ. Gladwell thus proposes there are only two things we can affect : 1. mastery - which is not just a matter of deep practise, but also long practise. 10,000 hours to be exact [a measure originally proposed by Cszikzentmihalyi]. And 2. purpose - we set the course of our life by believing there’s a real meaning to our work. This book is a lesson in hard-nosed realism that makes everything we know about historical innovation so far, make more sense.

How do social trends spread? Why do some things go viral and others not? This book is written for marketers, but super important for innovators to know, if we’re interested in growing our own Innovation Army. Berger’s book gives entertaining examples of viral campaigns, as well as a painstaking analysis of the science of social transmission that pretty much proves virality is not random and unpredictable - there’s psychology behind it. He proposed there are 6 main criteria that help predict what will go viral, and how to make it happen. In short, the book is a valuable blueprint for creating ideas, campaigns, and messages that catch on. Big. Let’s compare these insights to those in Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘Tipping Point’!
How do Ideas Last?
How do we get an Innovation Hotbed or Army to not just spread, but actually take root in a culture that is inhospitable? The status quo we live in is, almost by definition, well-entrenched and never gives up without a fight. So creating true. sustainable, change is never easy. Most startups don’t survive. Most community groups never get beyond small local actions. This new release book might help. For we find that to change any little corner of the world, we don’t need a charismatic leader or a catchy slogan. We need only a cascade: a bunch of small groups that are loosely connected yet totally united by a common purpose [and shared language].
