A Classic Work Everyone Should Know, as a Starter.

Legendary psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi reveals what leads to moments of creative ‘flow’ — whether we’re artists at an easel or scientists in a lab. Based on nearly 100 interviews with exceptional people in all walks of life; biologists, physicists, politicians, business leaders, poets and artists as well as stories from the factory floor, over his 30 years research on the subject, this book discusses why the "tortured genius" is basically a myth. Most important, Csikszentmihalyi explains why creativity needs to be cultivated and is necessary for the future of our world.

Your Basic Creativity Toolkit

What kind of hammer and chisel do you need to create great ideas from nothing? Nowadays we call them Thinking Tools. Michalko’s groundbreaking Thinkertoys was the only available book of this type when I started my research in 2001. This revised and expanded edition includes a multitude of linear & intuitive mind maps and hundreds of hints, tricks, tips, tales, puzzles and fun exercises to help you approach all sorts of problems in unconventional ways. Try all of them out and you’ll learn the basic techniques to look at the same information as everyone else and see something different. Of course, one tool does not fit all and so we also need to discuss where to best use each tool. In our bookclub, I’ll also show you how all the tools fit in the creative journey, taxonomy or process.

The First Step in Systematic Innovation.

There are 40 ‘best’ answers that man & nature ever had, to solve any evolutionary and technical problem that ever existed. They’re probably useful for your challenges too. Originally hidden in the 40 Inventive Principles of TRIZ, The Saurus gives you the secret. This is Inventive Thinking in a Teacup - simplified in language‚ expanded in scope and accompanied by pretty pictures. In our bookclub, I’ll show you how to make your own set of Inspiration Cards from this book and play innovation games that are so much fun, they make learning invisible. Six-year-olds will love it and Engineers can tap into this book in coffee breaks to develop breakthrough, world-class design.

The Fundamental Patterns of Creation.

Want to be an expert in seeing as Albert Szent-Gyorgyi said, ‘what everyone else has seen, but thinking what no one else has thought’?  Then you need to train your imagination to work with analogy. How? Start by identifying the Fundamental Patterns of Creation - the 3 Stages , 7 Steps & 1 Principle that hold it all together. Once you know what you’re looking at, you can see them in all ‘Big Data’. And that gives you a shortcut to analogical thinking, problem-solving & deep learning in your daily work, teamwork & lifework. Indeed, knowing how all humanity, nature and the cosmos create, will change what ideas you’re able to come up with for any STEAM project and transform what you can share with those you care about.  If you take this secret to heart, you can turn it into a new career.

Creative Thinking in Dreaming.

How can ancient Heroes from The Dreaming teach us to be deeply creative today? After all, we don’t live in Outback Australia.  And creatures don’t talk to us. Or do they? The Dreaming Tools suggest they can. And learning how to see their analogical messages in any space we inhabit can provide insight into our emotions, strengthen our connection to the environment and enhance our ability to innovate in daily life. Part personal pilgrimage, part interdisciplinary experiment, these 38 Indigenous myths are retold in combination with biology, geology and psychology for leaders, learners and innovators, for personal growth, teamwork and fun. It’s a radical twist in discussion in our bookclub that moves us from the rational, to the symbolic mind. It moves us from our head to our heart. I wonder what you’ll think!

How Creativity is Systematically Nurtured.

In five truncated words, Coyle’s point is that: “Greatness isn’t born.  It’s grown.”  Then he tells you how. Apparently, the author wondered why Brazil produced so many fabulous footballers and Korea so many famous women golfers. So he went looking for the answer. Talent hotbeds are what he found. This is his own term for areas - perhaps countries, perhaps tiny schools - that produce disproportionate amounts of world-class talent. And his point is that they don’t evolve by chance but as the result of a repeatable method of skill acquisition and building foundations of success based on 1. “deep practice”, 2. “ignition” and 3. “master coaching”. By understanding how these elements are related and in common, across all examples, this book presents a kind of methodology to crack the code on talent. It begs us to consider how to create a similar environment for excellence in innovation.

A Blueprint for Innovation Hotbeds.

How do we create a hotbed of innovation? What kind of mind training does it really require to be creative on demand - effortlessly,? We face the same questions if we want to create a world-class innovation culture that gets results on intractable problems in a technical industry as we do, when we want to create a community invention centre or school programme. And, possibly, we find the same answer - an imperative to create a gamified eco-system that shares a common language at all levels and has fractal manifestations. Originally designed as an innovation programme for the Engineering Industry, this book outlines how to create just such an ecosystem for systematic innovation that makes learning invisible and can spread virally. The exercises provide hours of fun for kids yet get results for adults in just minutes a day. Run the game to solve real-world problems as you go and teach others to DIY an Innovation Hotbed - or Army- in their local world.

How the Context for Innovation Matters. A Lot.

Gladwell’s book is another classic which suggests that talent is nurtured, not born. It focusses on the general context in which mastery & creativity can become possible for individuals, before Coyle’s ‘hotbeds’ ever exist - and indeed, potentially lead to their creation. One of the 3 main factors identified is out of our hands - history. Being born in the right historical place and time is critical - and likewise the history of events in our life. Being too young or too old to take advantage when luck smiles is no good. At the same time, the quality of our history determines success - it’s more important than IQ. Gladwell thus proposes there are only two things we can affect : 1. mastery - which is not just a matter of deep practise, but also long practise. 10,000 hours to be exact [a measure originally proposed by Cszikzentmihalyi]. And 2. purpose - we set the course of our life by believing there’s a real meaning to our work. This book is a lesson in hard-nosed realism that makes everything we know about historical innovation so far, make more sense.

How to Fast-track 10,000 Hours of Systematic Innovation.

The Invention Catalyst presents a universal framework, set of principles, shortcuts, tools and secrets simplified & gamified from The Theory of Inventive Problem-Solving [TRIZ] combined with the 7 Steps of Creation all human beings subconsciously follow, when we make or produce any kind of stuff. It’s a thinking system voted nationally leading in the UK since 2006, which has produced billions of Euros worth of invention in Aerospace Design. And in this new, easy-to-follow format with exercises, it’s designed to also help turbo-boost the top 3 skills the World Economic Forum says we all require in 2020 - greater clarity of thought, vastly improved creative idea generation and the compassion to make things happen well. This book will help you ask the all-important question no one asks and the answers no one sees, to give you the ability to profoundly impact your career & community, no matter in which domain or where in the world you choose to work.

Why Do Ideas Spread?

How do social trends spread? Why do some things go viral and others not? This book is written for marketers, but super important for innovators to know, if we’re interested in growing our own Innovation Army. Berger’s book gives entertaining examples of viral campaigns, as well as a painstaking analysis of the science of social transmission that pretty much proves virality is not random and unpredictable - there’s psychology behind it. He proposed there are 6 main criteria that help predict what will go viral, and how to make it happen. In short, the book is a valuable blueprint for creating ideas, campaigns, and messages that catch on. Big. Let’s compare these insights to those in Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘Tipping Point’!

How do Ideas Last?

How do we get an Innovation Hotbed or Army to not just spread, but actually take root in a culture that is inhospitable? The status quo we live in is, almost by definition, well-entrenched and never gives up without a fight. So creating true. sustainable, change is never easy. Most startups don’t survive. Most community groups never get beyond small local actions. This new release book might help. For we find that to change any little corner of the world, we don’t need a charismatic leader or a catchy slogan. We need only a cascade: a bunch of small groups that are loosely connected yet totally united by a common purpose [and shared language]. On their own, each group may seem inconsequential, but when they synchronize their collective behavior as networks, they become immensely powerful. Through the power of cascades, companies, industries and societies can be disrupted, reshaped or entirely remade. Looking at movements past and present, this book explores why and how some succeed while others fail.

Which Cascades turn into Cultures?

Where does a great, widely-spread, long-standing culture come from? And how do you build and sustain it in your group or strengthen when it needs fixing? Daniel Coyle explores and provides a first answer to these two linked questions. Though visits to super-successful organizations — U.S. Navy’s SEALS Team Six, San Antonio Spurs, IDEAL Pixar, Union Square Hospitality and more — he concludes that, just like individual talent, successful culture may look and feel like magic, but it’s not. It’s a set of living relationships working towards a shared goal. It’s not something you are - or have. It’s actions you do. ‘Doing culture’ seems to include 3 critical components - Sharing Safety, Sharing Vulnerability and Sharing Purpose. Some of us might wonder why it’s news that we need to act like gracious Human Beings to create a caring, honest and inspired world. Be that as it may. This book confirms everyone in our bookclub is already on the right track.
